General environmental awareness and an understanding of the challenges the world and specifically Indonesia are facing is still limited in this island nation. Knowing that our youngest are the future we see
education as a key task to nurturing the appreciation and protection of our environment. We work hard to establish love for our planet and embed environmental friendliness into our children’s mind with the hope they can inspire their families and their children to care for a greener and better world.
We educate our students about the worldwide problems of climate change, rising sea level, deforestation and air pollution to make sure every student has a general picture what is happening and why we must change our ways. Even more important is to establish that
all of us can make a difference
even just by doing small things. We offer debates and lectures, like the presentation by a
Borussia Mönchengladbach Coach
recently, about what can be done at our school and in our private lives to become more environmentally sustainable, building awareness about the reduction of water usage, energy saving, waste separation, public- versus private transport and the massive challenge of plastic packaging waste.
The project group “Green DSJ” was established in 2019 as one of the school's development projects (PQM) and is part of the “Steering Group”, which is representing the school board, the heads of school, parent- and student- associations, tasked to plan the school’s future. It is a
growing team of DSJ teachers, students and parents who meet bi-monthly.
We have multiple projects which we are working on continuously to
improve the sustainability of our school. It is important for us that our students learn how they can improve their surroundings by themselves. Here are some of our key activities over the last 3 years ...
The school is always concerned about our waste management. We provide different bins for different types of waste in the classrooms and the common school areas. Students are taught and reminded how to correctly separate waste and to bring their own plastic and paper trash from their classrooms to a ‘collection bin’ every week to become more mindful. The collected trash is sent to a recycling facility which our school has partnered with.
In the spirit of recycling, our school ensures to make use of any materials available to us, including our yard scraps. Everyday, our gardeners collect dried leaves and other organic waste to be processed and turned into compost in our very own composting facility. We are proud of our high quality compost, which we sell within our wider community.
We all have collected plenty of things that once were dear to us, yet over the years became useless and forgotten. We encourage students to look at their
"trash" which might be somebody else's "treasure" and sell these items at our flea market events. This way they can find new homes for old belongings, while at the same time earn some money. In addition to our regular flea markets, we offer an e-flee market (via email), easing the selling-buying process through digital communication.
Since 2020 our yearly main event is the DSJ Green Week. During these weeks we offer many different programs during and after class like lectures, presentations, art projects and discussion groups about environmental protection.
